We represent one of Australia's largest and most innovative full service law firms.
Due to continued growth in the team and a healthy pipeline of interesting and complex construction matters, they are looking for a front-end focused and/or back-end construction lawyer/associate/senior associate (with 3 to 9 years' post admission experience) to join their busy and well-regarded team in Sydney.
Construction team The firm's Sydney Construction team consists of seven highly regarded partners with a proven track record of working successfully with principals, government, financiers, contractors and service providers across the full range of sectors including mining and resources, rail, water, health, telecommunications, construction and property.
The remainder of the team is made of up of several special counsels and senior associates, a few associates and junior lawyers, rotating graduates and paralegals.
Collectively the team provides advice throughout the entire project lifecycle, from inception through to tendering, contract negotiation and drafting, project management advice, contract interpretation, claims management and dispute resolution.
Position Description These positions are due to the continued organic growth of the practice.
If you are a
back-end construction lawyer you will work for some of the partners in the group handling a mixture of complex disputes including litigation, mediation and arbitration, and claims under the
Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act. If you are a
front-end focused lawyer you will work with experienced front-end partners on a range of matters including regularly advising clients on the drafting of:
- design and construct agreements
- alliance agreements
- contractor and subcontract agreements
- joint venture agreements
- project agreements.
This role will also see you providing advice on procurement methods and structures, the tender process and probity (including drafting associated documentation) and general project management.
From the get go you will have direct client contact and often be required to independently run medium size projects with the support of junior and mid-level lawyers.
Your client list will include national and international property developers, major engineering companies and a variety of ASX listed corporations.
Requirements You must have between
3 to 9 years' front-end and/or back-end construction experience from a leading law firm or an in-house team in Australia or another major construction and infrastructure heavy jurisdiction. Commercial litigation lawyers who have an interest in developing a career as a construction litigator are also encouraged to apply.
In addition, you will have:
- strong written and verbal communication skills
- a willingness to work across a number of partners
- an ability to build strong client relationships
- an ability to be flexible and efficient under pressure
- a team focused attitude and if senior, an ability to act as mentor to junior lawyers.
