We are currently seeking an experienced Freedom of Information (FOI) Counsel to join the Information Law team on a secondment basis within a prestigious Federal Government Department
About the Role
We are looking for a Senior FOI Counsel (APS6/EL1 equivalent) to assist with managing Freedom of Information (FOI) requests. This is a secondment opportunity for an initial short term period with potential for an extension.
The role sits within the Information team as well as a larger legal team. You will work closely with a skilled team of professionals, providing vital support across various projects and BAU tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpreting and clarifying the scope of FOI requests
- Drafting consultation notices and access decisions
- Reviewing documents and preparing redactions based on guidance from decision-makers
- Managing information access and disputes
- Handle any challenges or reviews of FOI decisions, including appeals to oversight bodies like the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC)
- Handling ad hoc tasks as directed
The client is preferring full-time equivalent support, however may consider someone who is preferring 4 days per week.
About You
The ideal candidate will have significant experience in managing FOI requests within a government or legal context, particularly under the Freedom of Information Act 1982. You will be a strong communicator, with the ability to interpret complex legal frameworks and draft clear, concise documents. You will be detail-oriented, organised, and able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
The position requires you to have experience within FOI preferably within a Commonwealth Government context. You will ideally hold a baseline security clearance.
