27 Jun To perm or not to perm? You still asking?
A little while back, I wrote a very impressive article on this very topic, you can click this link and see a shot of me with hair!
I wanted to do a follow up article 12 months later to support my cause by providing some statistics, and more insight on the topic.
Some of the fantastic benefits for candidates when considering a contract role is the opportunity to break away from their traditional career path and try something completely different; whether it be utilising their skills in a new industry, working for a not-for-profit, ASX listed corporate, public sector or private sector in-house legal team. That said, one of the questions we are often asked by lawyers considering such opportunities is what is the likelihood of a contract role: (a) being extended; or (b) converted to a permanent, longer term role?
I thought I’d get some stats ready for you so I can back myself up here!
If we look at all the contract roles we have worked on over the last 12 months:
- 6% of roles were not extended, and were kept to their original contract term;
- 37% of roles were extended from their original contract term;
- 18% of roles were extended for an additional period;
- 20% of roles were converted into a 6 or 12 month fixed, or maximum term contract; and
- 19% of roles were converted to a permanent role.
This means that really only 1 out of 20 roles did not offer an extension, or temp to perm conversion. And the reality is, for that one role, there are plenty more where that came from, and Monty Edge have plenty of roles on offer…
So if you are a lawyer considering a contract role, then consider the above stats and give me a call; I love to chat, and am happy to talk through all the options available to you. Life is short, take a contract role – you never know where it may lead. Monty Edge will be with you, every step of the way.
